EXAMPLES OF GOLD ITEMS WE BUY
HOW WE TEST & EXAMINE GOLD
When you come in with your Gold Jewelry, an Experienced Gold Purchasing Professional will sit down with you and Examine each Piece of Jewelry/Stone carefully using State of the Art Technology. Each Piece of Gold is Tested using a Gold Tester that Measures the Karat Weight of the Gold. We also use
ELECTRONIC GOLD TEST
When we test your gold pieces, we use an electronic gold tester. This machine verifies the validity of the gold item and also provides the true karat weight of the item. This tester sends a small electrical charge to the item and measures its level of resistance with an advanced sensor.
Our gold buyers have been trained to look for the Hallmark Stamp which notates the karat weight of the gold, like 14K or 18K. The purity of gold items is measured in karats and thus the maker of the gold item places the Hallmark stamp on the piece to notate what quality gold was used to create the piece. Counterfeit gold items can also have this stamp, hence the reason for testing with an electronic gold tester or acid testing the gold.
NITRIC ACID TEST
Another method of testing gold is the nitric acid test. This is normally reserved to be used on strictly scrap gold. Our gold buyers will not use this method to test gold items if they have any aesthetic value. To perform this test, our gold buyer will make a light, tiny scratch on the item using a small file. Then nitric acid is applied to the file mark, if real gold, no chemical reaction occurs. However, nitric acid does react to other common metal alloys and we can then tell if the item is solid gold or not.
The magnet test is also a good, simple test to determine if gold is real or fake. If your gold item is attracted to a magnet, it is not real gold as gold is not magnetic. However, this doesn't mean that there is no gold in your item, but that it is not made with a substantial amount of gold.
